I had saved this recipe years back but lost it and was desperately looking for it but I did not know the name of the dish.. its a popular breakfast dish in Karnataka called Gojju avalakki.. Recently I found a reel on insta with this dish and modified it to suit my taste buds.. its a simple poha recipe with tamarind paste, here I made an instant masala powder and used it

Prep Time: 20 minutes

Cook Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsps tamarind pulp

  • 1 tbsp jaggery powder

  • salt to taste

  • 1/2 cup water

  • 1 & 1/2 cups thick poha

  • 2 tsps turmeric powder

Spice powder

  • 2 tbsp coriander seeds

  • 5 kashmiri red chillies

  • 2 tsps peppercorns

  • 1 tsp cumin seeds

  • 1/2 tsp methi seeds

  • 1 tsp hing

To temper

  • 2 tbsps oil

  • 1 tsp mustard seeds

  • 1 tsp urad dal

  • 3 red chillies

  • 3 tbsps peanuts

  • 3 tbsps fresh grated coconut (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Dry roast all the ingredients for spice powder and grind this to a fine powder

  2. In a wide bowl, add the tamarind pulp and dissolve the jaggery

  3. Add the salt, turmeric and the spice powder (as much is needed) and mix it well

  4. Add 1/2 cup water and mix it well

  5. Powder the poha to a coarse powder and add this to the water mixture

  6. Mix it well and keep it aside for the poha to soak up everything

  7. In a pan take oil and add all the ingredients for tempering

  8. Once the peanuts has roasted well, crumble the poha and add this to the tempering

  9. Adjust the salt and saute it for a minute

  10. Garnish with grated coconut and have it hot
